The San Francisco 49ers solidified their organizational structure Thursday when they named Trent Baalke as the team's vice president of player personnel. Baalke was promoted from his previous position as director of player personnel, where he made a strong impression last month overseeing the team's draft process in place of former general manager Scot McCloughan, who parted ways with the… View full post on Yahoo! If ever there's another landmark play like The Catch, which marked the beginning of an era of excellence for the San Francisco 49ers, it may not be in the city that hosted that and many other storied NFL moments. Voters in Santa Clara — about 45 miles south of San Francisco — will decide on June 8 whether to lease property to the team adjacent to California's Great America theme park to… View full post on Yahoo! Impressed by his handling of the draft, the 49ers promoted Trent Baalke to vice president of player personnel. The job comes with a four-year contract and more responsibility but stops short of giving him general manager duties.

Team president Jed York, in announcing Baalke’s promotion, said that coach Mike Singletary will retain final say over the 53-man roster. Some of the other lines of power are gray, which means some of the decision-making will be done by consensus.

Baalke acknowledged: “I think people get way too caught up in the term ‘general manager’ and what that states. I think from the draft, free agency, the final 53, the cuts, all that stuff, when you look at the broad scope, it’s a team effort. View full post on Yahoo! Sports – NFL – San Francisco 49ers News

General manager Scot McCloughan has came out and said that he is not interested in bringing in quarterback Michael Vick once the Ex-Falcon is done with his suspension. So McCloughan does not want to bring in a quarterback that can change this teams offense? Instead he hopes Alex Smith can recover from shoulder surgery and come back and be a great quarterback?

Something sure doesn’t sound right here. I know Vick messed up big time with the whole dog fighting incident, but he has served his time and I expect him to be on a NFL roster. Why not the 49ers? This team could use a a little boost on the offensive side of the ball.

Wow this is kind of surprising as the San Francisco 49ers have signed left tackle Joe Staley to a six-year contract extension. Usually teams will let the players rookie contract run out or at least into the second year before they sign them to an extension. However the 49ers wanted to lock up Staley and build the offensive line around him for the years to come.

“Joe Staley is the type of player we want to continue to add to this football team,” 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said. “He’s a tough, versatile, no-nonsense type of guy who wants to do whatever it takes to help his team win football games”.

“Joe is a consummate team player and has been completely unselfish in the way he has approached his role on this team. We know what he means to the success of the 49ers and getting this extension done puts us in a very nice position for the future.”

The six year extension contract calls forĀ  $42 million in new money and $18 million being guaranteed. Looks like we can expect Staley to be the big man on the 0-line for years to come!

The first major injury hit the team as corner back Walt Harris has torn his ACL in his right knee. Harris will need to undergo surgery and more than likely will miss the entire 2009 season. The team is pretty short at the corner position but one name that has popped up is Dre Bly.

I’ve heard rumors that Bly could possibly meet with the team on Thursday. Bly wouldn’t be a bad option at this point. The team will need to get a veteran in there to fill in for Harris in my opinion as they are already pretty young in the secondary.

Your thoughts?

As OTA’s begin for the San Francisco 49ers, the team has cut ties with defensive back Jimmy Williams who they signed in the off season. Williams had been drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2006 draft but didn’t last long with them at all. The 49ers took a shot at him by signing him to a free agent contract in Jan of 2009 but things just didn’t work out and they cut him loose.

Curtis Taylor the teams seventh round draft pick in the April draf, he was signed to a four year contract. Taylor played at LSU where he started 22 games in his career. In that span, he recorded 112 tackles, two sacks, 11 passes defensed, five interceptions and one fumble recovery.
