SANTA CLARA – Moments before the 49ers’ first padded practice of training camp, Hall of Famer pass-rusher Charles Haley got the attention of Aaron Lynch. “I’m going to be watching you,” Haley said Sunday morning, giving Lynch a not-so-subtle expectation for his day of work. On Day 3 of training camp, the 49ers’ pass rush provided reason to expect the team’s defense should be dramatically improved from a year ago. Although Lynch has slid down the depth chart under the new regime, there is no denying he remains a player with vast potential. Lynch gave Haley plenty to appreciate, as he broke through for a couple of sacks during 11-on-11 drills. Arik Armstead, who is lining up with the first-team

During the team's annual fan forum on Sunday, Ravens president Dick Cass and owner Steve Bisciotti said they are trying to gauge the response from current and former NFL players, as well as sponsors and fans, before they make the decision to sign Kaepernick. After Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he has had multiple discussions with Kaepernick, Cass stated again that Baltimore have had direct contact with the former San Francisco 49ers QB, but they are still weighing the decision.

SANTA CLARA – There is something different about Reuben Foster. It is similar to when Patrick Willis stepped on the practice field with the 49ers for training camp in 2007. He started out as a backup and had to earn his way onto the field. All it took was two exhibition games. Brandon Moore was out of the starting lineup. Patrick Willis was in, and seven consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl followed. Foster is not being handed a starting job with the 49ers. In fact, he faces a more difficult challenge to break into the starting lineup. In front of Foster is veteran Malcolm Smith at the weakside linebacker spot. Eventually, Foster’s role in the 49ers’ defense will be the middle linebacker spot, where

Solomon Thomas signed his contract, rushed to the locker room to throw on a jersey and cleats, and ran out to the field to join the rest of his San Francisco 49ers teammates at the first training camp practice under coach Kyle Shanahan. "It was amazing to get out here and be here Day 1 with my team," Thomas said Friday. Thomas was able to pass the conditioning test while his teammates practiced and then watched the team drills in the final half of practice. While Thomas was anxious to join his teammates while waiting at his college campus at Stanford for the deal to get done, he said he wasn't worried this would be a long-term absence even though Chargers defensive lineman Joey Bosa missed a month last summer after also being drafted third overall and being represented by CAA.

Wednesday night’s news that Baltimore Ravens franchise quarterback Joe Flacco is dealing with a back issue – though it’s unclear how serious it is – of course led to speculation over whether the Ravens would bring in another quarterback. Colin Kaepernick played for John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim, with the San Francisco 49ers, and Greg Roman, who is currently the Ravens’ senior offensive assistant and tight ends coach, was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco during Kaepernick’s first four NFL seasons.

San Francisco 49ers cheerleaders perform before an NFL football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017. The NFL has shut down its cheerleaders' lawsuit over their skimpy paychecks. It's just that the cheerleaders fell flat in their attempts to argue that the NFL and 27 of its clubs had colluded to suppress their compensation.

There is no shortage of blame to go around for the Atlanta Falcons’ collapse in Super Bowl 51. The Falcons built a 28-3 lead in the middle of the third quarter and let it slip away, ultimately falling to the New England Patriots, 34-28, in overtime. Matt Ryan voiced one previously undisclosed factor in the collapse this week in an interview with Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, pointing the finger at the new coach of the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan has been the focus of a lot of the blame, but critique from the league MVP was a new one. The Falcons quarterback faulted his former offensive coordinator for taking too much time to relay the play calls. Ryan said he did not have enough time to change any of the
