So McCloughan does not want to bring in a quarterback that can change this teams offense? Instead he hopes Alex Smith can recover from shoulder surgery and come back and be a great quarterback?

Something sure doesn’t sound right here. I know Vick messed up big time with the whole dog fighting incident, but he has served his time and I expect him to be on a NFL roster. Why not the 49ers? This team could use a a little boost on the offensive side of the ball.

49ers sign Joe Staley to extension http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-sign-joe-staley-to-extension/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-sign-joe-staley-to-extension/#comments Fri, 05 Jun 2009 13:36:23 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-sign-joe-staley-to-extension/ Wow this is kind of surprising as the San Francisco 49ers have signed left tackle Joe Staley to a six-year contract extension. Usually teams will let the players rookie contract run out or at least into the second year before they sign them to an extension. However the 49ers wanted to lock up Staley and build the offensive line around him for the years to come.

“Joe Staley is the type of player we want to continue to add to this football team,” 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan said. “He’s a tough, versatile, no-nonsense type of guy who wants to do whatever it takes to help his team win football games”.

“Joe is a consummate team player and has been completely unselfish in the way he has approached his role on this team. We know what he means to the success of the 49ers and getting this extension done puts us in a very nice position for the future.”

The six year extension contract calls for  $42 million in new money and $18 million being guaranteed. Looks like we can expect Staley to be the big man on the 0-line for years to come!

Walt Harris out with a torn ACL http://www.the49ersblog.com/walt-harris-out-with-a-torn-acl/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/walt-harris-out-with-a-torn-acl/#comments Thu, 21 May 2009 01:40:25 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/walt-harris-out-with-a-torn-acl/ The first major injury hit the team as corner back Walt Harris has torn his ACL in his right knee. Harris will need to undergo surgery and more than likely will miss the entire 2009 season. The team is pretty short at the corner position but one name that has popped up is Dre Bly.

I’ve heard rumors that Bly could possibly meet with the team on Thursday. Bly wouldn’t be a bad option at this point. The team will need to get a veteran in there to fill in for Harris in my opinion as they are already pretty young in the secondary.

Your thoughts?

49ers release Jimmy Williams and sign Curtis Taylor http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-release-jimmy-williams-and-sign-curtis-taylor/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-release-jimmy-williams-and-sign-curtis-taylor/#comments Tue, 19 May 2009 15:21:21 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/49ers-release-jimmy-williams-and-sign-curtis-taylor/ As OTA’s begin for the San Francisco 49ers, the team has cut ties with defensive back Jimmy Williams who they signed in the off season. Williams had been drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2006 draft but didn’t last long with them at all. The 49ers took a shot at him by signing him to a free agent contract in Jan of 2009 but things just didn’t work out and they cut him loose.

Curtis Taylor the teams seventh round draft pick in the April draf, he was signed to a four year contract. Taylor played at LSU where he started 22 games in his career. In that span, he recorded 112 tackles, two sacks, 11 passes defensed, five interceptions and one fumble recovery.

2009 49ers Draft Recap

So who will the 49ers draft with their first pick? http://www.the49ersblog.com/so-who-will-the-49ers-draft-with-their-first-pick/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/so-who-will-the-49ers-draft-with-their-first-pick/#comments Fri, 24 Apr 2009 22:45:36 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/so-who-will-the-49ers-draft-with-their-first-pick/ It’s draft time once again, and everyone is wondering who the 49ers will draft with the 10th pick in the draft? Or will they even pick in that spot or possibly drop back a little bit and pick up extra draft picks? Draft guru’s Todd McShay and Mel Kiper have released their latest mock drafts. So here is how things shape up as of now by these two “gurus”

Todd McShay = Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB, Texas

Mel Kiper = Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri

Could Josh Freeman drop enough to the #10 spot for the 49ers to grab him? That is one questions that is going around on the blogs right now. I don’t want Freeman that is one thing I will make clear. He hasn’t shown me the accuracy and composure that I want at the quarterback position.

So who do you think the 49ers will take with their first round pick on Saturday?

Issac Bruce coming back for one more year http://www.the49ersblog.com/issac-bruce-coming-back-for-one-more-year/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/issac-bruce-coming-back-for-one-more-year/#comments Thu, 02 Apr 2009 19:29:47 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/issac-bruce-coming-back-for-one-more-year/ The San Francisco 49ers were hoping that wide receiver Issac Bruce would come back for another season and finish out his contract and that is exactly what the veteran will be doing. He informed the team on April 1 that he would like to come back and be part of the team for another season.

This is good news for the 49ers as they sure could use Bruce at one of th wideout positions. Bruce led San Francisco with 61 catches for 835 yards and seven touchdowns last season, his first with the 49ers after 14 seasons with the Rams.

Despite some fans thinkings out there, I wouldn’t expect Bruce to be catching balls from Jay Cutler. The Broncos want two first round picks and not a quarterback in return. I just don’t see the 49ers management getting in on the talks for Cutler.

Alex Smith reworks contract to stay in San Francisco http://www.the49ersblog.com/alex-smith-reworks-contract-to-stay-in-san-francisco/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/alex-smith-reworks-contract-to-stay-in-san-francisco/#comments Wed, 11 Mar 2009 13:28:03 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/alex-smith-reworks-contract-to-stay-in-san-francisco/ Former starting quarterback Alex Smith has reworked his contract for the the 2009 and 2010 season so he could remain a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Smith was due to make $24.6 million in the final two years however he will now be paid $4 million a season.

Smith will battle with Shaun Hill in training camp for the starting job once again. Smith had been the starter but struggled and also had shoulder injuries the past couple of years that really hurt his development. He is still trying to live up to the #1 pick that the 49ers used on him back in the 2005 draft. In that draft, the 49ers selected Hill over the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Braylon Edwards, DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman.

It will be interesting to see what the 49ers do at the quarterback position. Do they draft another young qb or hope that Hill and Smith can hold down the position and learn from their past mistakes?

Jimmy Raye the 49ers new Offensive Coordinator http://www.the49ersblog.com/jimmy-raye-the-49ers-new-offensive-coordinator/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/jimmy-raye-the-49ers-new-offensive-coordinator/#comments Sat, 31 Jan 2009 15:47:47 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/jimmy-raye-the-49ers-new-offensive-coordinator/ The San Francisco 49ers have finally hired an offensive coordinator. Jimmy Raye has been selected by head coach Mike Singletary to become the new offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers.

I know a lot of 49ers fans are not happy with this hire and they are even starting to already second guess the hiring of Coach Singletary. One reason fans do not want this hire is because Raye as an offensive coordinator in the NFL has an average record of  6 wins and 10 losses while only scoring just under 19 points a game.

Personally I would have liked to see a younger coordinator brought in. Raye just does not have the track record in the league as a coordinator to make us fans go “Wow, what a great hire!” Time will tell I suppose.

Tom Rathman named the new running backs coach http://www.the49ersblog.com/tom-rathman-named-the-new-running-backs-coach/ http://www.the49ersblog.com/tom-rathman-named-the-new-running-backs-coach/#comments Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:28:59 +0000 Cliff http://www.the49ersblog.com/tom-rathman-named-the-new-running-backs-coach/ Tom Rathman is coming back to the San Francisco 49ers! Rathman will be the new running backs coach after leaving the Oakland Raiders organization. Rathman interviewed for the position earlier today with coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan. Rathman takes over for Tony Nathan, whom Singletary fired after his only season on the 49ers’ staff.

Coach Singletary isn’t wasting any time to use his authority to fire and hire coaches. Look for the next hire to be an offensive coordinator which needs to be brought in soon.
