The first major injury hit the team as corner back Walt Harris has torn his ACL in his right knee. Harris will need to undergo surgery and more than likely will miss the entire 2009 season. The team is pretty short at the corner position but one name that has popped up is Dre Bly.

I’ve heard rumors that Bly could possibly meet with the team on Thursday. Bly wouldn’t be a bad option at this point. The team will need to get a veteran in there to fill in for Harris in my opinion as they are already pretty young in the secondary.

Your thoughts?

Alex Smith has said he will under go a season ending should surgery soon.  Smith visited with Dr. James Andrews as well as the 49ers team doctors and everyone thought it was his best decision to just go ahead and go through with the surgery.

I wish he would have just went ahead and had this surgery done before.  I never like when a player tries to rush back and isnt healthy, and in the end hurts the team more then helping.  Sure Trent Dilfer sucks, and Shaun Hill isn’t much better but they are better then a hurt Alex Smith.

Alex Smith will be sidelined and miss atleast one game, but that could easily be 2-3 games depending on how he recovers from a seperated shoulder.  Since the offensive line could not block anyone yesterday, the 49ers quarterbacks were sacked often and Smith went down early in the ballgame after being sacked and driven to the ground which caused the seperated shoulder.

Luckily for the niners, they do have a bye week after facing the Ravens on Sunday.

Bad news for the 49ers and Vernon Davis as tests have shown he does have a MCL sprain that was sustained the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday.  It really sucks because Davis had just started to get the ball thrown his way and had four catches on Sunday.

Expect Davis to miss atleast the next two weeks and then possibly be back against the New York Giants.

Good luck in your recovery Vernon.

Manny Lawson went down in Wednesday’s practice with a knee injury but the team didn’t think it was too bad at the time and Lawson used a stationary bike the remainder of practice, what they didn’t know though was the ACL was actually tore.

Lawson is second on the team with 14 tackles, showing impressive improvement from his rookie year. He started 11 games last season after San Francisco chose him with the 22nd overall selection, making 65 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks.

Veteran Hannibal Navies and seldom-used second-year pro Parys Haralson are the top candidates to replace Lawson.

The 49ers made some roster moves this week as they continue to trim down the roster as opening weekend will soon be here.  The players not making the roster were four-year veteran LB Roderick Green, second-year WR Marcus Maxwell, first-year players K MacKenzie Hoambrecker, G Nick Steitz, and LB John Syptak and rookies P Ken Parrish, CB Sammy Joseph, FB Steve Dildine, and WR Dominque Zeigler.

The 49ers also placed DE Melvin Oliver and WR C.J. Brewer on the injured reserve list.

Wide receiver C.J. Brewer tore his right acl during Tuesdays practice and will be lost for the season.  Brewer caught a ball and tried to cut and go upfield and knew right away that he tore it.  He should know, because five years ago, he tore his left acl.

Surgery will take place on Friday for Brewer.  He will have a cadaver acl placed in his knee to replace the torn one.

Good luck C.J. , we all hope you have a fast and successful rehab.

Starting running back Frank Gore will probably miss the entire preseason has he broke a bone in his right hand.  While it is his hand, Gore will still be able to do conditoning etc to make sure his legs are in football shape once the season comes around.  He will be re-evaluated next Monday to see how the injury is doing.

Michael Robinson, Maurice Hicks and Thomas Clayton will get extended work during training camp. Coach Nolan said the club could also look to add another running back to the roster.
