It was an ugly game for the SanFrancisco 49ers last night but they found a way to pull out the win during the last two minutes of the ball game.  Arnaz Battle scored the winning touchdown on a end-around from one yard out with 22 seconds left in the game to give the 49ers the win.  Battle previously fumbled the ball at the one yard line after making a bigtime catch and the ball was recovered in the endzone by the niners.  Per rules, the ball must be put at the point where the fumble occured since it was recovered by the same team in the endzone.

Another big play of the final drive was Alex Smith on a 4th and 1 when a pass play broke down and Smith scrambled down the sideline for a 25 yard gain.  Smith who finished the game 15-31 and 126 yards said that he knew he didn’t play well but he was happy with the final drive and picking up the win.

It was a ugly win yeah, but give the team credit for coming back and winning. That is all that matters is the W, not how pretty it was.

I was very impressed with the defense last night and especially Patrick Willis who looked great making his first career start.  For a rookie to fly around the field and make tackles like that, it is very impressive.

The 49ers secondary also played pretty good through the game.  They had a few penalties but you have to expect those in the first few games of the year.  Walt Harris and Nate Clements were big time signees that really helped out the team last night.  Well worth the money!

Lets hope the young team grows from this win, and learns from their mistakes.  Hopefully they come out and the offense plays a lot better against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

The 49ers feel to the Chargers in their last preseason game by the score of 13-16.  It isn’t as bad as it sounds considering the 49ers had 4 INT’s and 2 fumbles.  If you don’t have those tournovers it could have been a totally different game.  You have to praise the defense for only giving up 16 points when the opposing teams gets that many tournovers.

Starting quarterback Alex Smith didn’t have the outing that he would have hoped for.  He played the first quarter and one drive in the second quarter.  He threw one interception and his only drive in the second quarter he fumbled the ball while being sacked.  Smith finished the game going 3-8 for 23 yards.  Definately not numbers that you want your starting quarterback to put up.

I won’t blog much more about the preseason as we are all gearing up for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals.  Take preseason for what it is worth to your, other then that, lets move onto the real season!

The 49ers played the worst first half of their preseason Saturday night against the Bears as they were losing 31-13 at halftime.  When both teams first teams were playing against each other, it wasn’t even close as the Bears totally dominated every aspect of the game.  The 49ers defense made Sexy Rexy Grossman look like an allpro even though he was booed by the Bears fans.

Trent Dilfer helped led the team to a comeback in the second half but he couldn’t quite get the team over the edge as they still lost by three points.  He threw touchdown passes to Zach Hilton and Jason Hill in the 4th quarter while throwing for 99 yards.

I’m not too worried, I didn’t expect the team to beat the Bears to be honest as they are still ways ahead of the 49ers at this point. I like the fact Dilfer was able to score 2 TD’s in the 4th quarter and atleast make it a game, even if it was against the Bears third and fourth strings.

The SanFrancisco 49ers were able to comeback in the final three minutes of their game against the Oakland Raiders and win 27-21.  Shaun Hill led the team down the field during the 70 yard drive and rookie running back Thomas Clayton plunged in from one yard out for the winning touchdown.

The 49ers almost didn’t get the win however as Josh McCown and the Raiders drove down the field the final 35 seconds of the game and actually should have won.  Alvis Whitted dropped a sure touchdown in the endzone and that only left the Raiders with one more shot which was incomplete.

Ashley Lelie led the receivers with 4 catches for 57 yards, including a 1-yard TD catch. Lelie has primarily worked with the second and third units, but caught his first NFL pass from quarterback Alex Smith.

Due to injuries, Patrick Estes, Aubrayo Franklin, Frank Gore, Walt Harris and Bryant Young were held out of the game.

The San Francisco 49ers didn’t get off to the right foot last night as they dropped their first preseason game to the Denver Broncos by the score of 13-17.  The first half included all the highlights pretty much as it was all 3rd and 4th string players playing in the second half.

The 1st and 2nd strings for the niners player pretty well I thought.  In preseason you want your starters to look sharp and know what they are doing which they did that last night.  I don’t put much thought into last nights second half the game because a lot of those players won’t be getting that much playing time once the season starts.

Quarterback Alex Smithwent 4-for-5 for 58 yards passing while leading two first-quarter scoring drives for the 49ers.  He looked good and had a very nice pass to Arnaz Battle on a tight post route that was perfectly thrown.  Smith has a lot more confidence going into this year, then he has had in the past.  It is really nice to see the young guy with this much confidence and throwing the ball like he is capabale of.

Maurice Hicksand Michael Robinson both looked good in limited action in their battle to be Frank Gore‘s backup. Hicks rushed for 30 yards and Robinson added 25. Gore, the 2006 NFC rushing leader, will sit out at least the 49ers’ first three exhibitions with a broken hand.

The 49ers will next play on August 18th, this coming Saturday against the Oakland Raiders.  Get our there and support the 49ers if you are able to!
