Former starting quarterback Alex Smith has reworked his contract for the the 2009 and 2010 season so he could remain a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Smith was due to make $24.6 million in the final two years however he will now be paid $4 million a season.

Smith will battle with Shaun Hill in training camp for the starting job once again. Smith had been the starter but struggled and also had shoulder injuries the past couple of years that really hurt his development. He is still trying to live up to the #1 pick that the 49ers used on him back in the 2005 draft. In that draft, the 49ers selected Hill over the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Braylon Edwards, DeMarcus Ware and Shawne Merriman.

It will be interesting to see what the 49ers do at the quarterback position. Do they draft another young qb or hope that Hill and Smith can hold down the position and learn from their past mistakes?
